Child and Family Safety Service | Tiaki Whānau — Canterbury

The wellbeing of children is everyone’s responsibility. A child’s health and development can be seriously affected by physical or sexual abuse, neglect, and family violence. Services we provide

The Child and Family Safety Service:

  • supports tamariki and their whānau through expert care and partnership
  • provides training and guidance to staff working for Health New Zealand Canterbury.

We receive referrals from Oranga Tamariki, Police, health professionals, and community agencies when there are concerns about child abuse, neglect, or family harm.

We:

  • provide medical assessments
  • provide guidance on child protection and family violence concerns
  • work alongside other services to ensure children and families get the right care and support at the right time.

We are also involved in delivering Gateway Assessments and Infant2Teen Health Assessments, which help identify and respond to the holistic health and educational needs of tamariki.

By working together, we can help ensure tamariki and whānau are safe and supported, and the wellbeing of tamariki is at the centre of our decision making.
