We provide a number of maternity and newborn services in Canterbury, along with community organisations.
Pregnancy and parenting classes (antenatal classes)
We provide free pregnancy and parenting education classes for new parents at a range of locations and days of the week. There are also young parent classes in Christchurch for those under 23 years of age.
We recommend booking before 20 weeks so you are able attend the class of your choice. Your birthing partner or support person is welcome to attend with you.
Breastfeeding and other newborn support
When your pēpi is born, you will be offered support to breastfeed.

There is additional community support available in Canterbury.
If you are having difficulty breastfeeding or just want some more support, you can join one of the many free breastfeeding groups around Canterbury.

Waitaha Primary Health provide a specialist support service for any complex breastfeeding problems. They can provide support at community-based clinics, at home or through email, text or phone call.

The Early Start Project provides home visits and support to people in difficult circumstances who have a new pēpi at home. The service is available to people who live in the Christchurch area. You can refer yourself to this programme or you can be referred by your:
- healthcare provider
- Well Child nurse or midwife.
There may be a waiting list.

Mental health support
Some women can experience mental health issues in pregnancy or after the birth of their pēpi. As well as our specialist mental health services, you can find support in the community.
Perinatal Wellbeing Canterbury
Perinatal Wellbeing Canterbury provides community support groups for parents who have depression or anxiety during pregnancy or after the birth of their pēpi.

Plunket Postnatal Adjustment Programme

The Plunket Postnatal Adjustment Programme is a free short-term service that can help you cope with distress or depression after having a pēpi. Support is provided by an assessment in your home with follow-up support by home visits or phone.
