Services we provide

The RRS has 2 units, each with a different rehabilitation focus.

Tāwhirimātea

Tāwhirimātea is a specialised inpatient unit that focuses on recovery and extended rehabilitation. It accommodates up to 29 people who need a higher level of support within a secure environment.

Tāne Mahuta

Tāne Mahuta specialises in intensive rehabilitation. Patients stay in either:

  • a 14-bed inpatient setting
  • a self-contained cottage next to the main building.

The 8 cottages range from 1 to 5 beds. They provide an environment focused on supporting individual independence and give people the opportunity to experience a flatting situation.

What to expect during your stay

When you are admitted to the unit you will meet your:

  • key worker (usually a nurse)
  • associate key worker.

Your key worker is responsible for coordinating your care with your care team.

You will usually also be assessed by the medical staff on the day of your admission. You may be assessed again as needed during your stay.

Staff members at the unit wear identification badges and you can ask them about their roles.

Usually at least 2 meetings are held with your whānau. These are usually:

  • within the first fortnight, where we will give your whānau a progress report
  • toward the end of your stay, where we explain the plan for your discharge from the unit.

Visiting

Visiting hours are between 2:30pm and 8pm every day.  You need to call first to arrange your visit. You can only visit outside of programme and meal times. Staff will let you know when these are.

Visits by whānau or friends are encouraged as maintaining social contacts plays a positive role in a person’s recovery. Some areas within the units have restricted access.

Rātonga-Rua-o-Porirua is smoke free. You cannot smoke in the inpatient units or anywhere on the grounds.
