Services we provide

We provide specialist care for a wide range of respiratory conditions such as:

  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • asthma
  • lung cancer
  • cystic fibrosis
  • sleep apnoea.

We provide:

  • outpatient clinics
  • lung function tests
  • diagnostic sleep tests
  • inpatient care when needed
  • treatment for sleep apnoea.

We work together with community providers to support people with respiratory illness.

Respiratory physiology laboratory 

We provide a range of pulmonary function tests to help diagnose lung-related conditions. Our clinical physiologists contribute to research and education, including spirometry training courses.

The laboratory also has strong community links with general practices, which can also provide spirometry screening for some conditions.

Sleep health services

We diagnose and treat people with sleep disordered breathing and other sleep related conditions. Sleep health services has strong community links with general practices, which can provide screening for some conditions.

If you have had a successful trial of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy through Christchurch Hospital sleep health services you may need to use a CPAP device long term.

Cardio-respiratory integrated specialist services

A team of clinical nurse specialists, Māori health workers and others provide expert care (both inpatient and outpatient) to people with a wide range of respiratory and cardiac conditions.

These include:

  • lung cancer
  • cystic fibrosis
  • sleep disorders
  • heart failure and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)
  • infectious diseases.

The team can also see people who need:

  • cardiac rehabilitation
  • tuberculosis supervised treatment or directly observed therapy
  • Māori health support
  • help with respiratory equipment, for example patients who are discharged from hospital with home oxygen.
